Olive oil is very popular in the Mediterranean cuisine and known for its healthy properties. But does this precious oil also benefit dogs and other animals? Many experts recommend adding olive oil to the animals. Then find out why.
Benefits of olive oil for dogs
Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and therefore ideal for dogs. It also provides vitamin E and omega 3, nutrients that nourish the skin.
The precious oil is characterized by unsaturated fatty acids that strengthen the immune system of animals, keep them healthy longer and promote weight loss.
However, always pay attention to the right amount, because too much can be laxative! If the dog is constipated, you can give it a bit of olive oil.
Olive oil has a positive effect on cholesterol levels and keeps joints and muscles healthy. Therefore, it is very healthy especially for older dogs suffering from pain.
How is the oil administered?
Size and weight of the dog are very important in the calculation of the amount. Note the following recommendations:
- Small dogs (up to 10 kg)> 1/2 teaspoon per day
- Medium sized dogs (11 to 30 kg)> 1 teaspoon per day
- Large dogs (over 30 kg)> 1 ½ tablespoons per day
You can just add the oil to the feed. If your dog likes unsalted rice cookies, you can also add a few drops of olive oil here.
Nice coat and healthy skin
The oil makes the coat of the dog shine, is very positive for the skin and has a strong antioxidant effect on the cells. It can also be applied directly to the skin to treat minor injuries or redness. Use extra virgin olive oil from the first cold pressing, so that your dog can benefit from all the advantages!
Rosehip oil is also recommended for skin problems for external use, because it has a regenerating and healing effect. The dog is not allowed to take it!
Regulation of evacuation
A dog empties the bowel once or twice a day. If it does not take longer, you can help with the oil of olives, because as already mentioned, it is slightly laxative.
Treatment of the paws
The paws of dogs are heavily used and may show cracks or minor injuries. Also in this case, the valuable oil for care can be very useful! Just rub your paws gently every day with a few drops of oil.
