How do you know that your dog is getting older?

Various signs can make us aware of the aging process of a dog.

Even in dogs, time does not pass by without a trace. Unfortunately, our four-legged friends are aging too fast. But how does one recognize that a dog gets older?

Your dog is getting older very fast

Various signs can make us aware of the aging process of a dog. When a dog gets older, various precautions are recommended to give him a nice retirement.

It is a very natural process, but with different signs of wear and disease.

Two phases that show that the dog is getting older

In the first phase, the animal begins to age at the cellular level. The coat turns into different areas, for example on the legs and the muzzle. At the same time mobility is reduced and the dog calmer.

In the second phase, the aging process accelerates. The coat becomes dull and also the behavior of the dog changes. The risk of kidney and heart disease is especially high at this age.

Signs that the dog is getting older

In small dogs (under 5 to 10 kg), aging begins at the age of 7 or 8 years. At the age of 12, the last stage of life begins for her.

Dogs up to 25 kg will not be that old. They come already with 6 to 7 years into the ripe age and can be called starting from an age of 10 years as old age.

Large dogs, between 30 and 45 kilos, are considered ripe at the age of five. Your last period of life begins at the age of 8 years.

Very large dogs age very quickly from the age of 5 and usually do not get older than 10 years.

The breed also plays a role

The breed of the dog is another fundamental factor affecting the average age. For example, a boxer usually does not live as long as a German shepherd.

The long life of the miniature poodle is known. The record, however, holds Bluey, an Australian Shepherd, who was 29 years old!

Signs of the aging of the dog

  • Like us, dogs also get gray hair. The color of the coat changes especially in the face.
  • They are getting calmer. The animal is not so active and moves less.
  • Some movement avoids an old dog completely, because the joints and muscles can hurt. The four-legged friend will make fewer wide jumps.
  • As the dog gets older, it has more need for rest and less energy.
  • Cognitive dysfunctions can also occur. The memory gets worse, the dog may forget where his bowl is or where he should do his business.
  • He can no longer hold his urine and it will increasingly come to “accidents” in the house.

Tips to simplify the aging of the dog

It is necessary to have a lot of patience with the animal. Daily walks are important but must be shorter. The dog is not as strong as at a young age.

If the quadruped’s teeth fail, he needs special food.

By brushing daily, you can stimulate the circulation and at the same time observe whether skin lesions or bald spots form.

When palpating the lymph nodes, you can see if there are swellings that could indicate cancer.

If your dog has long hair, make sure that your eyes are clear so that your vision stays clear.

Regular check-ups at the vet are very important in older dogs!
